The majority of our clients come to us when they have a brand new pet—sometimes a puppy but often one about a year old. Or they come to us as their pet is aging and they want a great portrait before it’s too late. There is a previous blog post here about photographing puppies.
But say you have a senior pet and you’d like to get a great portrait of them to enjoy now as well as to remember them after they’re gone. As our studio tag line says, a great portrait will make you laugh, cry and remember the good times you had together.
It’s important to try to get your pet’s portrait taken while they’re still relatively healthy, not having too much difficulty walking, seeing or hearing. It’s also a great idea to have it done before their eyes get cloudy from cataracts. Having some hearing it’s pretty essential for them to respond to the commands needed for a great portrait. Good vision helps as well plus their eyes will look more alert when not overly cloudy.
It’s not necessary for your pet to stand throughout the session—which can be difficult for senior pets. Yet a few standing shots or even those sitting up straight are great to have.
Winston (shown at top) is 13 and recently came in for his portrait. Though pretty old for a larger breed dog he still had good hearing and vision. As well as a great sense of smell (he loved his treats!). As we say with all of our pet portraits familiarity is key. We have the pet and owner come in for a pre-session meet and greet before the actual portrait session. This can be a day or two before or a few months before. It’s really up to your schedule. By coming in prior to the session the pet is able to meet us and check out the studio (there are a lot of animal scents in here). This helps to greatly reduce their stress level when they return for portrait time. Whether a day or a few years or more—dogs are great at remembering smells. When they return for the session they’ll remember the studio and us and be ready to go.
